AFC secures global contracts as furnace innovations gain traction
South African-based engineering firm Allied Furnace Consultants (AFC) was awarded the supply of two identical 80-t transfer cars for the Sakura smelter based in Sarawak, in Malaysia, in 2025.
These transfer cars form part of an expansion project on a current ferromanganese smelter for which AFC also supplied two identical 150-t transfer cars in 2014. “AFC has established itself as a worldclass supplier of transfer cars and hydraulic tilters on the international stage.
Our clients reap the benefits of our robust and reliable technology which is evident from receiving repeat orders. All AFC’s technology equipment is fabricated in our own workshops based in Jet Park, Boksburg,” says AFC director Tertius Pieters.
AFC has also developed and fabricated a pilot Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC) for a customer in the Platinum Group Metals (PGM) smelting industry.
The TBRC is a highly versatile, tiltable and rotatable pyrometallurgical furnace that provides the customer with the opportunity to significantly reduce the iron content in its PGM-containing alloy. “It has the real potential to become a gamechanger in South Africa as most PGM concentrates contain high values of chromium oxide (Cr2O3), which is problematic for matte smelting.
However, when producing an alloy, the high Cr2O3 content does not pose any issues and the process yields a very high PGM recovery,” explains Pieters.
In addition, AFC has also been awarded the Detailed Engineering phase after a successful Basic Engineering phase for a new green steel DC arc smelter based in Texas, in the US. “This bespoke process with adjacent technologies will be the first of its kind in the world producing high purity iron,” Pieters concludes.
